How to select a badminton racket / racquet

Here at Badmintondirect.com, we understand that selecting a badminton racket can be intimidating when there are thousands of selections. So how do you know which racket suits you best? Here are some questions you can ask yourself to narrow down your selection:

  1. Am I a beginner player or an elite player?
  2. Am I looking for more power or control from the racket for my singles and/or doubles play?

Below is a chart from Yonex that illustrates the racket features.

Things to consider when making your choices: weight balance, string tension, frame and shaft flexibility.

WEIGHT BALANCE: The best rackets for beginner players or players who prefer control play, especially net shots, are light weight or head-light because they are easier to deliver quick strokes and recoveries. Light weight rackets allow fast and controlled swing especially in games with rapid directional changes. They are best used to generate speed and control. Because of their light weights, they do not place excess pressure on the wrist and shoulders, reducing risk of wrist strains and shoulder injuries.

Yonex Nanoray and Arcsaber Series offer fast and controlled play with the Yonex Nanoray Z-Speed advertised as the "fastest racquet on Earth" at 493 km/hr. The lightest Yonex racket model is Yonex Arcsaber Flashboost FB, which provides easy and control maneuverability.

Elite players or players who prefer power play will enjoy heavy weight or head-heavy rackets that allow stronger smashes and clears. However, they are more difficult to control and may not suit every player's playing style.

Yonex Voltric Series offer "all-round" performance by combining both power and speed. Yonex Voltric 70 E-tune and Yonex Voltric 80 E-tune offers players adjustable grommets that allow multiple possible configurations to tune the weight balance and power distribution of the racket.

STRING TENSION: When selecting a string tension: tloos (<24 lbs. tension) strings will offer more power and durability. As a general rule, we recommend 24 lbs tension for most players.

FRAME AND SHAFT FLEXIBILITY: A racket with a flexible shaft will offer more power through enhanced repulsion and shock absorption. This type of racket is best for players who like to make clear shots with extreme speed. A stiffer racket will offer more control. This racket type is best for players who want to deliver precise shots. There are also rackets that are in between.
